20.10.2025

James Manning appeared in the Court of Appeal (Criminal Division) earlier this year, led by Richard Thomas KC (of Doughty Street Chambers): R v Maria Joao GONCALVES [2025] EWCA Crim 1260. The case was an appeal against conviction from the Crown Court at Snaresbrook (HHJ Falk); the grounds of appeal related to the admissibility of material suggesting that the appellant had been convicted in a foreign court of an offence of dishonesty, whether the appellant was entitled to give evidence asserting that she was a person of good character, and whether the appellant was entitled to a full good character direction. Lord Justice Holroyde (Vice-President of the Court of Appeal, Criminal Division, as he then was) gave the judgment which has been reported on CrimeLine and on BAILII
