Nexus Chambers’ Ife Thompson Wins Rising Star – Barrister Award 2026
01.05.2026
Nexus Chambers is delighted to announce that Ife Thompson has won the Rising Star – Barrister Award 2026, recognising her exceptional contribution to the legal profession through advocacy, innovation and commitment to racial justice. The Judges stated that she is a clear future leader of the Bar.
This prestigious award celebrates legal professionals across the UK who are driving meaningful progress in diversity, equity and inclusion.
Ife’s Background
Before being called to the Bar, Ife founded BLAM UK, a Black British cultural education and wellness organisation, and established a legal observing initiative focused on accountability and community justice. She has carried that same community-rooted ethos into her legal practice, using the law as a tool to challenge inequality and support those most impacted by injustice.
Ife’s practice includes youth justice, language-based injustice and racially aggravated matters. She has also been at the forefront of developing innovative approaches within criminal defence, including the use of racial trauma evidence and Black language experts to challenge discriminatory assumptions in the justice system.
Judge’s Reflections
Among the matters highlighted by the awards panel was a significant case in which Ife defended a 22-year-old Black university graduate prosecuted for tweeting a racial term to another Black user. The case raised wider questions about the criminalisation of Black language and culture. Ife successfully argued that the CPS had failed to properly consider the defendant’s Article 10 rights to freedom of expression, alongside the cultural and linguistic context of Black British English, with broader implications under the Equality Act 2010.
In recognising her achievement, judges noted that Ife is:
“Already shaping legal discourse and professional practice well beyond career stage, positioning her as a clear future leader of the Bar.”
Reflecting on the award, Ife said she is deeply honoured by the recognition as it highlights the importance of alternative approaches to lawyering, particularly via movement lawyering that supports communities to use the law as a tool for change.
She added that she remains excited for the future ahead and is grateful to the judges for recognising her contributions to diversity, equity and racial justice.
Everyone at Nexus Chambers congratulates Ife on this outstanding and richly deserved recognition, and looks forward to all she will continue to achieve in the years ahead.
