Nexus Chambers Hosts Discussion at Brixton Library on Black Music, Racism and Criminal Injustice
14.05.2026
Nexus Chambers is proud to host Policing the Beats: Black Music, Racism and Criminal Injustice with Lambros Fatsis at Brixton Tate Library on Tuesday 19 May 2026.
The event will examine the policing and criminalisation of Black music in Britain, exploring how genres such as grime and drill have often been treated through the lens of criminal justice rather than recognised as important forms of cultural and artistic expression. The discussion draws on the work of Lambros Fatsis, whose research focuses on Black music, racism and state power in Britain.
Joining Lambros Fatsis on the panel will be Brian Richardson and Ife Thompson of Nexus Chambers. The discussion will consider the historical and contemporary policing of Black musical expression, from colonial-era surveillance and censorship through to the use of rap lyrics and drill music in criminal proceedings today.
Hosted at Brixton Library in the heart of Windrush Square, the event reflects Nexus Chambers’ continuing commitment to advancing conversations around racial justice, freedom of expression and equality within the legal system and wider society.
