James Manning appeared today in the Court of Appeal representing phone hacker Glenn Mulcaire

James Manning appeared today in the Court of Appeal (Holroyde LJ, Swift & Johnson JJ) representing Glenn Mulcaire, the former private investigator at the centre of the phone-hacking scandal who was convicted of hacking the voicemails of murdered schoolgirl Milly Dowler, amongst others. 

 

Mr Mulcaire was seeking to appeal his 2013 convictions for:  

 

  • conspiracy to unlawfully intercept Andrew Gilchrist’s voicemail messages, between December 2002 and January 2003, contrary to s1(1) of the Criminal Law Act 1977; 
  • conspiracy to unlawfully intercept Delia Smith’s voicemail messages between February and March 2005, contrary to s1(1) of the Criminal Law Act 1977;
  • conspiracy to unlawfully intercept voicemail messages of persons associated with Rt. Hon Charles Clarke between April and June 2005, contrary to s1(1) of the Criminal Law Act 1977); and
  • unlawful interception of Milly Dowler’s voicemail messages in April 2002, contrary to s1(1) of the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000. 

 

Holroyde LJ, Vice President of the Court of Appeal (Criminal Division), gave judgment refusing leave to appeal.
