Background:

James was educated at Scotus Academy in Edinburgh and St Josephs College, Ledsham, in Cheshire before embarking upon a career in the police. During his 30 years service he undertook a number of high profile roles including;

  • Setting up and managing one of the first multi agency  ‘Family Units’ dealing with child protection and domestic violence.
  • Managing the ‘Tactical Firearms Unit’ of Cambridgeshire Constabulary, with the remit to deal with spontaneous and planned firearms operations and the protection of the then Prime Minister, the ‘Right Honourable’ John Major MP.
  • Leading Cambridgeshire Constabulary’s response to ‘animal rights activity’ against ‘Huntingdon Life Sciences’, which included managing large scale public order demonstrations and crimes against staff and property .
  • Developing and managing the police probationer curriculum at Shotley Police District training centre as part of National Police Training, where he was awarded a ‘Bramshill Fellowship’ for his research into the police probationer curriculum.
  • Acting a one of the two hostage negotiation co-ordinators within the force.

James has been invited to speak on a number of occasions about the multi agency approach to child protection and domestic violence, including presentations at the ‘Police Staff College’, Bramshill and to American forces in this country. He also undertook work with Cambridge University reviewing ‘best practise’ in the video interviewing of children, which was then in its infancy.

Since being called to the bar James has advised Bedfordshire Police on the ‘Human Rights’ component of their tactical response to demonstrations planned by the ‘English Defence League’. He has also lectured to officers from a variety of forces about giving evidence, particularly in respect of ‘policy documents’.

For several years James was an associate lecturer on the Open University’s law programme teaching public law and in 2014 undertook the ‘training the trainers’ course to qualify as an advocacy trainer for the ‘Honourable Society of the Middle Temple’.
